www.mpdesigndrafting.com Mountain homes, remote, solitude, amazing views. Design challenges, weather, soil issues, runoff, constructability, and terrain difficulties. These sorts of projects are a challenge. Is the designer capable? Is the client adaptable? Are there builders willing to take on the project? These are all tests that a designer faces when designing a mountain home. Here is my process. Throughout the design I used intuition, local knowledge, and a full set of skills developed over the years having built at mountain locations. This is how I prevailed on this project. The builders were amazingly adaptable, making this clients dream home come true. This is a very well insulated home. The design uses the sun's energy through radiant solar gain through South facing window broadcast onto a mass floor. The floor has in floor heating which moves heat throughout the home. This gives a uniform heating experience for the occupant. www.mpdesigndrafting.com Great clients, great building site, fun to design. This home uses natural passive solar heating and passive cooling along with in floor heating. This makes a stable climate even though the outdoor temperatures swing from below zero F. to upper 90's F. Control of temperatures is through using floor mass as a stabilizer, double insulation strategy, correct depth overhangs, window awnings, and the correct window glazing or U-value. The home orientation and window location design is crucial for this to work.

These types of renderings give clients a good idea of where their design is heading before anything is built. This heads off misunderstanding in what the end product will actually look like. Not to mention it builds excitement in a new home project.

www.mpdesigndrafting.com A fun design. Could come to life for real. The concept is a realistically smaller plan (1200s.f.) for a couple that is a passive solar design with infloor heating. It is efficient in space and energy. The plan is split in the middle by a green house, bathroom, and laundry. This three zone strategy gives the bedroom suite maximum privacy. I would love to build this for myself, the curved walls would be fun to build. I know how it would be done. Anyone?
